Upon arrival at Delhi International Airport, you’ll be welcomed by your Authentic India Tours representatives who will transfer you to your hotel for a 1 night stay.

This morning you’ll be transferred to Delhi Airport for your flight to Leh, Ladakh. You’ll be met on arrival by your Authentic India Tours representative and transferred to your hotel.

After some time to rest and acclimatise to the high altitude, you’ll be taken to Shanti Stupa, a Buddhist white domed monument on a hilltop in Changspa. It was built in 1991 by Japanese monks to promote world peace. The day continues with a visit to the 17^th century Leh Palace, which offers amazing views from the rooftop, followed by an evening walk around the local market. Your first day in Ladakh concludes with a dinner in style at your hotel.

Following a leisurely breakfast, your tour today includes a drive to the statuesque Hemis Monastery, the largest and wealthiest monastery in Ladakh. Then you’ll head to Thiksey Monastery, which offers incredible views of the Indus Valley from its lofty hillside location. Thiksey is known for its gigantic seated statue of the Maitreya Buddha and its impressive Dukhang (assembly hall) housing hundreds of rectangular prayer books, stacked between wooden covers and bound in silk.

Your day then continues with a drive through a series of chortens (another word for stupas – Buddhist monuments often containing relics) to visit Shey Palace the former summer residence of the King of Ladakh. After an exciting day of exploring, relax and unwind over dinner at your hotel in Leh.

After breakfast, the tour continues to Ulley, visiting the Phyang, Likir and Alchi Monasteries en route. Alchi is one of the earliest monasteries built in Ladakh and dates back to the 11th century.

Later, your tour continues to Uleytokpo, a tiny village 70 km west of Leh. Here you can get settled into your new accommodation and end the day with dinner.

Today, your adventure takes you to the fascinating village of Lamayuru, with its unusual moon-like landscape. You’ll venture high up in the hills to Lamayuru Monastery, the oldest in Ladakh. This fascinating 10th century holy place is believed to have been a sacred site for the pre-Buddhist religion called Bon and is home to a selection of fine frescos, carpets and Tangkhas.

From the monastery, you can enjoy amazing views over a green carpet of farming terraces. The complex includes one of the oldest libraries in the region, containing extensive books and other literature on the Tibetan Kagyupa Sect. You’ll also visit Rizong Monastery perched at the top of a rocky valley which is home to around 40 monks. The monastery is known as “the paradise for meditation” and is noted for its extremely strict rules and standards.

After breakfast, your tour takes you back to Leh stopping at Basgo along the way to explore the half-ruined temples and castle that are the last reminder of its former royal precinct. This town on the banks of the Indus River was once an important cultural and political centre of Ladakh.

Once you leave Basgo, the route returns to Leh. You will have some leisure time in your hotel along with a delicious dinner.

Today’s drive to Nubra Valley will be a magical experience, as it will involve travelling on the highest motorable road in the world, the Khardung La Pass at a whopping 5,360 metres high.

Following that exhilarating journey, you’ll arrive in Hunder by the afternoon. After lunch, you can travel across the sand dunes by camel safari to explore the Diskit and Hunder Villages.

Diskit may be a modest village, but it is known as the commercial centre of Nubra and features the Diskit Gompa Monastery on the surrounding hillside. The pretty Hunder Village is home to the small Chamba monastery and a medieval watchtower offering fantastic panoramic views.

It’s another full day today starting with a visit to Sumur to explore the 140 year-old Samstanling Monastery and then to Ansa to see its hilltop monastery. You will then head to Panamik Village to see the hot water springs with steamy water gushing from under the ground.

Next on the list is Yarab Tso, a small holy lake between the Nubra Mountains.

In the evening you will return to Hunder where you can dine in the hotel and spend time relaxing under the stars.

Today’s journey takes you to Pangong via Shayok and onto Tang Tse and Spangmik (Pangong). Part of the road is uneven but it is a beautiful route. The road follows the Shayok River and climbs up a mountain before descending into Shayok Village.

It takes less than an hour to reach picturesque Shayok, a large village surrounded by barren mountains. In the afternoon you’ll head to the breathtaking Pangong Lake. This shimmering body of water is 4,300 metres above sea level, and you can while away the hours sitting by its beautiful banks or strolling around its shores.

Then it’s back to the camp for dinner, which you can enjoy whilst looking out over the lake.

Accommodation: Pangong Sarai Camp, Pangong

If you can forfeit a lie-in, it’s worth getting up early this morning to witness the spectacular sunrise over the lake. Then, enjoy a leisurely breakfast before you start on the lofty drive to Leh via the 5,486 metre high Chang La Pass.

After checking in to the hotel at Leh, your evening is free for shopping or to spend at your leisure.

Enjoy dinner and a final stay in Leh.

All good things must come to an end! You’ll be transferred to Leh Airport with plenty of time to board your flight to Delhi.
