Sigiriya, Sri Lanka
Discover Sigiriya, Sri Lanka
It’s easy to see why the Ancient City of Sigiriya is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular tourist destinations. This ruined 5th-century city, some 25 kilometres from Dambulla, evokes previous grandeur with its finely planted gardens, mirror wall, monastery, and moat and wall defences.
The 200m high granite Lion Rock fortress, with its beautiful murals including the stunning ‘Maidens of the Clouds’ and the ruins of a royal palace at the summit, is the primary attraction.
The archaeological evidence of religious societies living in the area in the third century BC precedes the Ancient City of Sigiriya. After killing his father and seizing the throne from his half-brother and successor, Monarch Kasyapa commissioned the city. His brother restored the crown and made Anuradhapura the capital city, leaving Sigiriya to the monks. Until colonial archaeologists discovered the ruins in the early 1800s, the city had been abandoned. Large sections of the ancient city are currently being excavated.
