Nubra Valley, Ladakh
Discover the Nubra Valley
The beautiful Nubra Valley is home to sand dunes, quaint villages and crumbling chortens (dome-shaped monuments containing Buddhist relics) dotted around the dune-like landscape. Keen bird enthusiasts might get the chance to spot the Valley’s feathered inhabitants, including the White-browed Tit Warbler, the Tibetan Lark and the Ruddy Shelduck.
Highlights of a trip to the Nubra Valley
- Khardung La Pass – The journey itself to Nubra is exciting, as you can reach it via the Khardung La Pass, the highest motorable road in the world at a whopping 5360 metres.
- Diskit – Although it is known as the commercial centre of Nubra, Diskit is still a modest village. High above the town is the Diskit Gompa monastery which can be accessed by car or on foot, passing engraved walls and whitewashed chortens.
- Hunder Village – The picturesque Hunder village lies around 10 km west of Diskit and is home to the small Chamba monastery. Between the Shyok River and the base of the mountains, you can see camels grazing, and there is a great trail up into the hills to reach a medieval watchtower with panoramic views
