Negombo - Sri Lanka

Discover Negombo

A mere 10km from Katunayake International Airport, the beach resort Negombo with its long stretch of silver sand is the perfect place to unwind after arriving or before flying home.

Wrapped around a lagoon predominately fished for delicious prawns, Negombo was one of the first beach resorts in Sri Lanka. Take a sunset stroll to see local fishermen prepare their brightly coloured wooden boats ready for the next day’s trips and excursions. In the evening, head to the lively restaurants and cafés behind the beach to sample freshly caught seafood.

Negombo was originally known for its cinnamon, and its natural port passed between the Jaffna kings, the Portuguese, Dutch and British. Negombo’s nickname ‘Little Rome’ is thanks to the Portuguese legacy of pastel-painted Catholic churches.

Get a taste of coastal Sri Lankan life in Negombo Town a couple of miles south of the beach, with its Buddhist temples, Portuguese churches and Dutch canals. If you’re seeking the sun, the hottest months are April, May and June.
