Spread out over the western region of Himachal Pradesh, Kangra is home to the Kotoch dynasty, one of the oldest surviving royal dynasties in the world. Kangra dates back more than 3,500 years and its famous fort has survived many battles. The natural beauty of the area attracted many artists after the decline of the Mughal empire in the 17th century, giving rise to the famous Kangra school of painting.
