Kandy, Sri Lanka
Discover Kandy, Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s second-largest city and highland capital is famous for one of Asia’s most sacred objects, the ‘Tooth Relic’ of the Buddha. The tooth is kept in the Dalada Mahagana, the ‘Sacred Temple of the Tooth’, where a Thevada or special offering takes place three times a day with music from the temple orchestra in their traditional dress.
In the summer, Kandy hosts the spectacular 11-day Esala Perahera festival which dates back to the fourth century. It features a midnight parade through Kandy with 100 elephants and 5,000 drummers and dancers, as well as the Tooth Relic Procession itself, where an elephant carries a replica of the famous tooth.
After becoming the island nation’s capital in 1470, Kandy’s medieval grid system became one of a kind in South Asia, with its 486 historic buildings. The town also has a Ceylon Tea Museum housed in a former 1920s tea factory, the Peradeniya botanical gardens and the tranquil Gadaladeniya hilltop temple.
