Jaffna, Sri Lanka
Discover Jaffna, Sri Lanka
Jaffna, the capital of Sri Lanka’s Northern Province, has been a prominent harbour since ancient times. The town is located on a peninsula curving across the Palk Straits towards India, where its Tamil-speaking inhabitants’ forefathers came from. The massive temple gateway towers soaring above the skyline are the most visible monuments, the largest belonging to Sri Lanka’s largest and most respected Hindu shrine, Nallur Kandaswamy.
The busy Chunnakam Market boasts an especially vivid fresh produce section, which is a whirl of colour, commotion, and powerful fragrances. Items made of Palmyrah wood, such as traditional cooking utensils, make great souvenirs.
