Dharamshala is a popular tourist destination located in the upper reaches of the Kangra Valley in Himachal Pradesh. Surrounded by cedar trees, this pretty town is home to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile and offers a calming spiritual feel.
Things to do in Dharamshala
- Visit McLeod Ganj. Also known as Upper Dharamsala, McLeod Ganj is 10km uphill from Dharamsala city. McLeod Ganj is a wonderful place to visit to learn about Buddhism, Tibetan culture and history, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Also known as ‘Little Lhasa’ due to the large Tibetan population, McLeod Ganj is the home of the 14th Dalai Lama.
- Explore the Dalai Lama (Tsuglagkhang) Temple Complex. The main attraction of Dharamshala is the Tsuglagkhang Complex, the largest Tibetan temple outside Tibet and the official home of the Dalai Lama. It showcases Tibetan culture at its finest and draws tourists and pilgrims from all over the world. While you’re there you can visit the Kalachakra Temple next door and pay your respects at a Buddhist shrine.
- Discover Namgyal Monastery. Established by the 3rd Dalai Lama in 1575, Namgyal Monastery was relocated during the 1959 Tibetan uprising to Dharamshala. The monastery is one of the most visited places in Dharamshala and is home to around 200 Tibetan monks. Visitors can learn about Tibetan culture and meditate in calm surroundings.
- For scenery venture to Masrur. If you’re looking for fantastic scenery to photograph, then Masrur is the perfect place. This stunning spot is famous for its 8th century rock-cut temples containing intricate carvings depicting images of Hindu deities from the Hindu epic the Ramayana, including Lakshmana, Lord Ram and Sita.
