Bumthang Valley, Bhutan
Discover the Bumthang Valley
Brimming with legends and stories, and dotted with temples and some of Bhutan’s oldest monasteries, Bumthang Valley is a wonderful place to get away from it all.
Located in the heart of Bhutan, the region was undeveloped and quite isolated until a road was constructed in the 1970s. The broad valley has many habitats including coniferous woodland, alongside picture book villages. The main town in the valley is Jakar, home to Bhutan’s only brewery that produces Red Panda wheat beer, named after the rarely sighted bear living in the temperate forests and spending its day sleeping in trees.
Bumthang is divided into four gewogs (groups of villages), Chhoekhor, Tang, Chhume and Ura, with each of the four valleys having its own dialect of Bumthangkha, a Tibeto-Burman language.
