Badami - Karnataka
Discover Badami
This former capital of the ancient Chalukya Empire is located on the shores of Agastya lake, and surrounded by striking red sandstone cliffs. As you wander the narrow backstreets of Badami you’ll catch sight of ruins and carved wooden doors, vestiges of this ancient civilization. Here you’ll also find Badami’s famous cave temples an example of Indian rock cut architecture at its finest. Along with some of the earliest Hindu temples in the region, the caves are constructed from soft sandstone and are ornately adorned with paintings and carvings.
Things to do in Badami
- Explore these wonderful caves
- Climbing and bouldering. The Badami sandstone cliffs are a climber’s paradise, as they have horizontal crank systems to assist your ascent. What a way to take in the scenery (if you dare!).
- Discover the local primates. Badami has a warm climate that makes it a safe haven for monkeys, which you can spot roaming free in their natural environment.
- In the evening, the last rays of sun tinge the entire landscape a deep golden colour. The Bhutanatha temple is the perfect location to watch the sunset.
