Discover Wilpattu National Park, Sri Lanka
Wilpattu translates literally from Sinhala as ‘Land of the Lakes’ with up to 60 ‘willus’ which are natural, shallow basins on the open plains that collect rainwater making superb watering holes for wildlife and habitats for birds. The largest national park in Sri Lanka, Wilpattu National Park was founded in 1938 but was closed to visitors during the civil war during the 1980s- 2000s.
Wilpattu is home to elephants, water buffalo, deer, leopards, sloth bears and crocodiles, alongside over 200 species of bird including the pompadour green pigeon, Ceylon parakeet, and the Ceylon grey hornbill.
The best time to visit is May to September, or early October, when the drought brings wildlife out to the 60 waterholes. To see sloth bears, visit in May-July when the palu fruit trees bear fruit.
