Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, Kerala
Discover Thattekad Bird Sanctuary
Located on the foothills of the Western Ghats and surrounded by 25km of beautiful forests, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary was the first of its kind in Kerala. This paradise for birds was declared a sanctuary in 1983 after Salim Ali the ‘Birdman of India’, a renowned and world-famous ornithologist, described the sanctuary as the ‘richest bird habitat’ he had seen.
The huge variety of trees provide the ideal haven for the hundreds of varieties of birds that can be seen here. Colourful and characterful species ranging from The Indian Pitta, a vibrant yet shy bird, spend their winter months here as well as the Large Billed Leaf Warbler, who is often heard rather than seen. Aquatic birds such as the Oriental Darter and Comorants, excellent fish hunters and divers, add to the mix of land and water birds. Part of the Thattekad Birds Sanctuary is commonly referred to as the ‘Cuckoo’s Paradise’ due to the many varieties of cuckoo spotted here. The list is endless!
Visitors at the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary have the opportunity to experience the Interpretation Centre and learn about the anatomy, science of and migration patterns of birds. The Salim Ali trail with an experienced guide will offer the chance to spot many more birds as well as the chance to take part in bird monitoring. Witness the care and dedication that goes into the reserve and the birds themselves at the rehabilitation centre where veterinary care is provided for injured birds and animals. With an array of butterflies, plants, fish and mammals to experience, this location is ideal for bird and nature lovers!
