Named after the Hindu goddess Hassanamba, this Karnataka district was ruled by the Hoysala Empire, and their influence can be spotted in the decorations on monuments. Hassan City itself is clean and modern, and is set within beautiful countryside.
It is the place to be for lovers of history, heritage and old architecture in India, famed for its temples and ancient monuments. Many of the district’s temples were built between the 10th and 14th centuries, when the Hoysala dynasty ruled Karnataka, and are well known for their intricate carvings.
Things to do in Hassan
- Discover the monuments of Hassan, most of which can be found in the scenic countryside of Hassan District
- Visit the Hoysaleshwara Temple at Halebidu to learn the stories of the past carved in stone or the world-famous soapstone Chennakeshava Temple at Belur.
- Other temples include Lakshmidevi, Sadashiva, Bucheshwara and Someshwara.
- Discover the precious flora and fauna. Bisle Ghat is a reserved forest set over 40 hectares. The Ghat is fiercely protected by surrounding villagers to prevent theft of its elephants, king cobras and sambar deer, and many types of high value trees including Teak, Rosewood and Tulip.
