Lose yourself in a sea of emerald green in the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest. You’ll find this absolutely stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site around 110 km from Kolkata, an undiscovered paradise covering around 4264 sq. km. Its name comes from the Sundari (Heritiera Minor) mangrove plant and it literally translates as ‘beautiful jungle’.

A part of the world’s largest delta formed by the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna Rivers, the Sundarbans is crisscrossed by hundreds of tributaries and creeks, a network of tidal waterways, mudflats and tiny islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests. This network of water means that you can reach almost every part of the forest by boat or raft, the perfect way to explore this beautiful and unique place.

The Sundarbans also act as a vital protective barrier for residents in and around Kolkata against the floods produced by the regular cyclones in the area.

The park is one of the world’s largest Tiger Reserves, and amongst the greenery, you might catch a glimpse of India’s most iconic wildlife species – the Royal Bengal Tiger. Also making the Sundarbans their home is a wide range of fauna, including over 260 species of bird and numerous animals including rare species such as the Indian python and estuarine crocodile.

Other points of interest within the park are the Netidhopani and Sajnekhali Watchtowers for great views, and Bhagabatpur Crocodile Project, the only crocodile project in West Bengal, located on the bank of the Saptamukhi Estuary.
