Discover Punakha
Punakha, about 15.5 miles (25 kilometres) east of Thimphu, is where visitors get their first real flavour of rural Bhutan. Its dzong (fortress) is one of the country’s most famous monasteries, built in 1638 and located at the confluence of two rivers. It is a truly authentic showcase of Bhutanese artistry, with an especially magnificent assembly hall filled with beautiful clay figures and detailed murals.
The dzong is also famous for the Punakha Tshechu festival which takes place each February or March. During the event, an enormous and exquisitely appliquéd thondrol (sacred flag) is unfurled to bestow merit on those who behold it.
