Cochin (Kochi) - Kerala

Discover Cochin (Kochi)

Cochin, also known as Kochi, a port city located in the state of Kerala has been one of the primary gateways to the region for distant merchants and travellers since 1341, including the famed Chinese traveller Ma Huan in 1413. The rule of the city has passed between conquerors from far-flung nations: the Portuguese, the Dutch, the Mysoreans and of course the British have all left their mark on the evolution of Cochin. Evidence of the district’s multicultural past can be seen in its diverse architecture. Where else in the world would it be possible to visit the oldest active synagogue in the commonwealth, a 16th Century European church and a Portuguese built, Dutch renovated palace, all in one day?

If architecture’s not your thing, Cochin has plenty more to offer. For example, why not sample some delicious street food from the vendors collected around Fort Cochin Beach, then stroll up towards the famous cantilevered Chinese fishing nets, which are still in use today – it’s especially worthwhile to watch the fishermen skilfully dip and raise the hammock-like nets into the water as they are silhouetted by the setting sun. The city embraces the water and several canals and tributaries connect Cochin’s islands to its mainland counterpart, so backwater boat tours are also on offer.
