As the sweet aroma of sandalwood wafts through the air and the majestic silhouette of the Chamundi Hills comes into view, we’re transported to the enchanting city of Mysore, our destination of the month.

From its World Heritage-listed palaces to its picturesque palaces and lush gardens, Mysore is one of South India’s most alluring cities, boasting a rich cultural heritage and a plethora of must-see sights to explore. This historic destination in Karnataka was officially renamed Mysuru in 2014.

With over 25 palaces in the city, it’s unsurprising that Mysore is nicknamed the ‘City of Palaces’! Mysore is also famous for its high-quality sandalwood, used to make perfumes, incense sticks, carvings and other decorative items.

Fans of the silver screen will recognise Mysore from the Oscar-winning The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and the Bollywood blockbuster Chamak Challo Chhalia.

In this blog post, we’ll give our top tips for exploring this historic destination, including the best time to visit, where to stay and what to see.

The Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is from October to March when the weather is pleasantly cool, ranging from 15 to 27°C. This period coincides with the festive season, including the spectacular 10-day Mysuru Dasara Festival. Dating back to 1610, this ‘Royal Festival’ celebrates the legend of Goddess Chamundeshwari’s triumph over the buffalo-headed demon Mahishasura, symbolising the victory of truth over evil. The festival enchants visitors with its vibrant dance performances, music, processions, exhibitions, and delicious food. One of the highlights is the Mysore Palace, which is beautifully illuminated with over 100,000 lights.

Where to Eat

Mysore is not just a feast for the eyes with its pristine palaces and bustling markets; it’s also a culinary haven offering a delicious array of traditional South Indian flavours, including two iconic dishes:

Mysore Pak from Guru Sweets

This renowned sweet treat, originating from the kitchens of the Mysore Palace, is a must-try. Crafted from gram flour, ghee, and sugar, Guru Sweets offers an authentic version of this delicacy, known for its rich, buttery flavour and crumbly texture.

The Mysore Masala Dosa

This traditional South Indian dish takes the classic dosa to a whole new level. This crispy, golden-brown crepe is made from a fermented batter of rice and urad dal (black gram) and is distinct for its spicy red chutney spread inside, which gives it a unique flavour and a spicy kick. For an authentic experience, head to Vinayaka Mylari or Hotel RRR, two iconic eateries in Mysore that have been serving this dish for decades.
